Maruí Movement Holds Event at UFSC on the Role of Students in the Antiimperialist Struggle
On March 27, the Maruí movement organized an event at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) titled “From Land Retakings to Antiimperialism: The Role of Students in Democratic Struggles,” as part of its program welcoming the university’s 2026 freshmen.
The event at UFSC brought together democratic organizations and student masses.
Speakers included a leader involved in the retaking of Laklãnõ-Xokleng Indigenous territory from Blumenau; a representative of the Support Committee for the newspaper A Nova Democracia in Florianópolis; and Professor Muhammad, representing the Free Palestine Front of Santa Catarina.
The speakers focused on analyzing the political situation and the advancement of the antiimperialist struggle in Brazil and worldwide. From this perspective, they discussed the development of democratic and revolutionary struggles following the Al-Aqsa Flood, as well as the importance of the struggle against large landownership as part of the fight against imperialism in semi-feudal countries.
The role of the militant student movement was highlighted, particularly in serving the people in both rural and urban areas, taking part in the struggles of the masses for a New Democratic, agrarian, and antiimperialist revolution.
Flags and banners from democratic and popular movements were present.
The event was held in the auditorium of the Socioeconomic Center (CSE/UFSC) and included a shared stand by the Maruí movement and the Support Committee for A Nova Democracia, where newspapers and books were distributed.
The following day, also at UFSC, another event was held presenting the history of the student movement, addressing the struggle for the democratization of education so that it serves the people, as well as the “two paths of the student movement” (revolutionary and reformist).
On this occasion, a brief overview of recent years of struggle at UFSC was presented, highlighting student mobilizations and victories, as well as the importance of reclaiming the combative and independent history of the student movement for new students.
During the break, live excerpts from the Victorious People’s Tribunal against the crimes of large landownership in Rondônia were shown. At the end, a discussion was held with the attending students on the themes of the struggle against imperialism and agrarian revolution.
