March 8, the International Day of Struggle of Proletarian Women, was massively observed in France in 2026, or at least far more than in previous years. 150 demonstrations were declared across the country, mobilizing 200,000 people almost double the number recorded in 2024.

In order to defend and bring forward the eminently revolutionary nature of March 8 and of the struggle for women’s rights, a multitude of red contingents present in more than 15 cities across France attracted far greater interest than in previous years. The antiimperialist slogans and the revolutionary figures honored by the revolutionaries received positive responses, for a simple reason: they stand in contrast to the usual speeches without perspective that spread pessimism and anxiety among the masses most determined to find a political solution to their problems. This year’s slogans act as a spontaneous response of the masses to the recent manifestations of the crisis of imperialism: genocide in Palestine, massive bombardments of Iran and Lebanon, the rise of fascism, and the drastic increase in the cost of living.

Throughout the day, on the revolutionary side, numerous actions were carried out, clearly contrasting with the defeatism and force of habit present in the mindset of many left-wing collectives. In Limoges, for example, the mobilization for March 8 was organized in two stages, beginning in the morning with a rally in support of a strike picket at the Chênaie nursing home (EHPAD) in Verneuil-sur-Vienne. The strike began on February 3 and is mainly followed by nursing assistants and nurses after management decided to abolish compensatory days off (RTT) for worked weekends. It is a mobilization of the working base mostly women from the EHPAD and the SMR Center, many of whom were not initially unionized, to which the CGT 87 chose to lend its support on March 8. Another example comes from Toulouse, where in the afternoon revolutionaries marched in the Mirail district an area heavily affected by demolitions together with women from the neighborhood, confronting municipal officials campaigning there with their hypocrisy.

To stupefy the masses, the reaction has appeared with its media apparatus producing filth and chauvinistic sentiments, seeking to transform the most revolutionary struggles such as March 8 into apolitical and cultural events. Today they target every revolutionary fragment that persists from the glorious past of the proletariat. The communist heritage of March 8 has been ideologically attacked head-on for the first time by reactionaries of all stripes, beginning with the uncultured Sarah Knafo and the vile Marion Maréchal-Le Pen, who for the first time participated with the racist and neo-Nazi collective “Némésis” in a counter-rally in Paris on March 8. This laughable counter-rally was in fact a tactical retreat by the fascists. It resulted from a small victory for the progressive movement: as in last year’s March 8 demonstration, feminist collectives unanimously refused the presence of fascists and united against the brown reaction and their participation in the march, which had prevented Némésis from completing the demonstration. Their Zionist friends from “Nous Vivrons,” along with other even less significant figures, attempted to infiltrate the Paris demonstration and others such as in Marseille. Once again they were isolated and could only march hundreds of meters behind the Paris demonstration thanks to the cordons of dozens of CRS riot police who ensured the private security of these reactionaries. Despite a certain softness and lack of radicalism in action, this general progressive tendency which still massively rejects reactionary politics is an encouraging sign and fertile ground for the development of revolutionary struggles.

The massive participation on this date is a sign of the growing will for politicization among the masses in France, particularly among youth and women. In an era of turmoil and major political changes, with the intensification of struggles against the global reaction moving toward war, the masses are seeking answers and a path toward a future other than death, oppression, and exploitation. The mass mobilization on March 8, along with struggles in recent years and the increasingly widespread joining of trade unions, are signs of a search for answers and a demand for organization among the masses.

In the famous revolutionary account Ten Days That Shook the World, journalist John Reed describes how the masses in Russia thirsted for politicization on the eve of the revolution:

“Hundreds of thousands of leaflets, distributed by hundreds of organizations, flooded the regiments, the villages, the factories, the streets. The thirst for education, repressed for so long, burst forth with frenzy from the beginning of the revolution… Insatiably, Russia absorbed reading as hot sand absorbs water.”

In the end it was the Bolsheviks who succeeded in winning the masses, giving birth to the first great socialist revolution.

We are not yet on the eve of revolution, but it is up to us to choose that destiny, because today the tendencies are already taking shape. It is the role of revolutionaries to mobilize, politicize, and organize the masses, for if revolutionaries are not equal to the task, the masses’ thirst for answers will be filled by reactionaries and electoral opportunists of every kind. Today as yesterday, the variable that will tip France will be the reconstitution of the revolutionary vanguard the Communist Party. The future will be made of socialism or barbarism.
