Bomb Bearing AntiImperialist Messages Explodes at Havan’s ‘Statue of Liberty’ in Maceió; Luciano Hang Alleges ‘Terrorism’
Luciano Hang, a far-right monopoly businessman and owner of Havan stores, once again denounced what he called “terrorism” following an action against one of his company’s statues in Maceió, Alagoas (AL). The incident occurred at 2:34 a.m. on July 2, when two people, according to released footage, broke open the access door to the replica of the “Statue of Liberty” and detonated an explosive device inside the structure, leaving behind leaflets bearing anti-imperialist political messages and the communist symbol.
Leaflets were scattered at the site bearing the slogans “Long Live the Heroic National Resistances of Palestine, Iran, Lebanon and Yemen!”, “Yankees Out of Venezuela, Cuba and All of Latin America!” and “Death to Yankee Imperialism!”, as well as the communist hammer-and-sickle symbol. Hang stated that “hundreds” of papers had been left at the site.
The businessman posted a video about the incident on July 3. In the caption, he called the perpetrators “terrorists” on three occasions, attacked what he called the “far left,” and stated: “We are becoming the country of crime and terrorism.” At the end, visibly outraged, Hang demanded action from the repressive organs of the old State: “I ask: are the authorities never going to find these criminals?”
Havan’s official account adopted a more restrained description. The company reported that no one was injured, that the structure sustained no damage, and that the security-camera footage would be analyzed. The Civil Police of Alagoas was placed in charge of the investigation; at the time the case was initially reported, there was no information regarding any suspects.
The replicas of the “Statue of Liberty” are used as a trademark of the retail monopoly and have become symbols of political and cultural servility to the United States of America (USA) in Brazil, even for some reactionary forces.
