Revolutionaries in Colombia Salute the Militant Student Protests in India
On August 7, protest actions were called across Colombia against the inauguration of Abelardo de la Espriella as president, whom demonstrators denounced as a lackey of U.S. imperialism and an executioner of the Colombian people.
The days leading up to the mobilization were marked by an intense campaign of pacifism and passivity led by the leadership of the bourgeois parties that make up the Historic Pact (Pacto Histórico), the party of the former president. Despite this, people took to the streets in Cali, Bogotá, and Medellín.
In Cali, a rally was held in defense of the Resistance Monument, a sculpture created by activists and militant youth during the Great Popular Uprising, which sections of the far right have threatened to demolish.
In Bogotá, artistic and cultural demonstrations were organized against the new president.
In Medellín, a march featured banners opposing fascism and the far right, the burning of effigies bearing the faces of De la Espriella and Trump, and various cultural performances.
In addition, revolutionaries from the Student Movement in the Service of the People (MESP) and the Antiimperialist League released a video saluting the militant student protests in India. They denounced the Rowlatt Act and Operation Kagaar, and encouraged the youth of India to continue along the path of revolution.
