Event in Portugal for the Agrarian Revolution in Brazil Brings Together Workers and Students

On January 17 an event in Lisbon on the Agrarian Revolution in Brazil was carried out. The initiative, done by Anti-imperialist Action (AIL) together with the Nova Aurora Support Committee in Lisbon, is part of an international campaign in solidarity with the masses of the countryside which stand up against latifundium, imperialism and the semi-feudality in Brazil.

It began by discussing the historical root of the agrarian question, with the emergence of the latifundium inherited from Portuguese colonialism, and continued to highlight the history of peasant resistance in Brazil, from the first uprisings to the development of the organized communist movement. A tribute was paid to the Lisbon-Brazilian revolutionary Alípio de Freitas, who passed away in 2017 and dedicated much of his life in Brazil advancing the struggle against latifundium.

Afterwards the organization of the masses in the countryside and the embryonic construction of the New Power in Revolutionary Areas were discussed, as well as the struggle for land and self-defense, and the leading role of revolutionary sectors that drive this process forward in extremely adverse conditions. The prolonged nature of the agrarian struggle was mentioned, developed in a context of strong repression by the old Brazilian State in collusion with big landlords and under the guidance of imperialism.

The leadership and growth of the League of Poor Peasants (LCP) in the face of latifundium violence, which includes murders, evictions, criminalization, and reactionary militarization of the countryside, were mentioned.

During the debate, the boycott of bourgeois elections was highlighted as “a task that every revolutionary must undertake in protest against the old State and its rotten institutions, indifferent to the genuine interests of the masses,” as stated in the article.

The event concluded with a call to spread the truth about the Agrarian Revolution and the LCP, as well as to strengthen ties between all those who, in different parts of the world, rise up against exploitation, oppression, and imperialist domination.
